With its machines, the Essen-Oldenburg-based company focuses on the waste management, abattoir, fishing and agricultural sectors. Almost all of its products involve welding work on a wide range of materials, including unalloyed and low-alloy construction steels or chrome-nickel steels with various material thicknesses. This diverse spectrum of work is bolstered by Vogelsang’s high degree of vertical integration. With such a wide range of materials and material thicknesses, the company has high demands for ist welding machines.

Gemeinsam mit EWM konnte Vogelsang die Nacharbeiten sowie den Verbrauch von Energie und Material erheblich senken. Dazu nahm das Unternehmen zehn MIG/MAG XQ Geräte in Betrieb.

Employing around 1,000 employees at 25 locations across the world, Vogelsang GmbH & Co. KG is one of the leading specialists in mechanical engineering for pump and crushing technology. With such a wide range of materials and material thicknesses, the company has high demands for its welding machines – and the same goes for its long-term partners. “We have been working with EWM for our diverse welding needs since as far back as the late 2000s. We work with material thicknesses ranging from 2 to 50 millimetres and process all kinds of materials. Here, having an experienced partner like EWM that can offer everything from a single source really helps,” explains Holger Münchow, Technical Purchasing at Vogelsang.

Die Vogelsang GmbH & Co. KG ist spezialisiert auf den Maschinenbau für Pumpen- und Zerkleinerungstechnik. Schweißen ist ein fester Bestandteil der Arbeit am Hauptstandort Essen-Oldenburg.

Vogelsang has relied more and more on EWM’s welding technology over the years as part of the successful collaboration. Welding work is very relevant to the production process of a mechanical engineer and so details such as a high duty cycle and efficient energy consumption are important for Vogelsang. Ultimately, though, it all comes down to the welder: “As well as a long service life and process reliability, the most important thing for us is that our welders are comfortable using the machines and able to achieve good results with ease. For us, that ranges from welding programs tailored to the materials and material thicknesses that we work with and generally easy operation, all the way to minimising post-weld work on the welded material,” says Holger Münchow. Vogelsang uses the EWM Taurus and Phoenix welding machines for its MAG welding needs. After purchasing its first machines in 2008/2009, the company once again chose EWM and its extensive product portfolio to upgrade its welding technology. The deciding factor: the consistently good experiences with the machines and related training as part of Vogelsang’s faithful collaboration with EWM. When it came to replacing more machines and welding sites at its headquarters in Essen-Oldenburg in 2021, the company quickly settled on EWM’s new XQ series. Vogelsang was immediately blown away by what was possible with the new power sources, noting in particular how user-friendly the machines were. The saved JOBs for different materials and material thicknesses were a particular highlight for the company, offering potential to significantly simplify work sequences. These allow the welder to load optimised, pre-programmed machine settings for every task. In addition to the modern machines and future-oriented service, the fast and easy availability of spare parts, welding consumables and welding accessories from a single source was also important to the customer.

A meeting with Vogelsang at their headquarters was arranged within just two weeks of the initial query. With ten new MIG/MAG XQ welding machines, the company was able to quickly establish welding sites in line with the state of the art. Vogelsang relied on the company’s welders to solidify use of the new technology, tasking them with compiling concrete questions that arose as part of changing tasks and requirements in day-to-day operations in the first few weeks following commissioning. These questions went beyond just welding parameters for materials and material thicknesses and also included requests for practical tips for the welding types used at Vogelsang – everything from MIG/MAG-related processes to special TIG work. Vogelsang can now use both welding processes on the same machine using the purchased Phoenix XQ. The main aim of this approach was clear: a condensed form of training with too much input at once must be avoided at all costs. “We don’t need to tell welders how to do their job, but every XQ power source also has digital technology built in. Intuitive operation allows welders to work more quickly and efficiently and achieve even better results. It’s just like a computer at home. They’re easy to use these days, but with a few tips and tricks users can work very efficiently to get the most out of them,” explains Werner Buss, Field Sales at EWM.

Vogelsang now operates around 80 welding sites at its headquarters – more than half of them are already equipped with EWM technology. The new XQ machines and their processes allow the company to work with extremely low spatter. They also significantly reduce the amount of post-weld work required. In just a few weeks, the positive effects of the XQ welding machines on energy and material consumption will also be clear to see. The machine users were also impressed: they wanted to replace all welding machines with the MIG/ MAG XQ series as soon as the first machines were commissioned. With such a positive response from welders, further collaboration between EWM and Vogelsang to modernise their welding sites is definitely on the cards.
